What’s AMC exam?

The Australian Medical Council (AMC) is an independent national standards body for medical education and training. Its purpose is to ensure that the health of the Australian community is promoted and protected by the standards of education, training and assessment of the medical profession. Overseas trained doctors, including Ethiopians, whose medical qualifications are not recognized in Australia undergo the AMC exams to assess their clinical skills and medical knowledge for registration purposes. The AMC examinations test knowledge, clinical competence, professional attitudes and performance.

They consist of a computer adaptive test (CAT) multiple-choice question (MCQ) examination, and either an AMC Clinical examination or Workplace based assessment. You must pass the AMC CAT MCQ Examination before you can apply for either the AMC Clinical Examination or Workplace based assessment.

Step 1: IMGs required to submit their medical degree (final medical diploma/primary qualification) in medicine and surgery for verification. It is important to determine that your medical school as well as your degree title and graduation year is eligible.

Step 2: Create EPIC account and confirm your identity with ECFMG. Indicate that you plan to apply to the AMC when completing your request to establish an account. Your EPIC ID will be confirmed in 2-3 working days.

You must provide two forms of identity (ID) documentation
 The primary identity document must contain your photograph and signature. These include: drivers license, passport, state/county identification card, alien registration card (green card, permanent residents visa).
 The secondary identity document must contain your signature. These include: credit card, bank/ATM card, social security card
N.B: Both your primary and secondary ID documents must contain your signature and your primary ID document must also contain your photograph.

Step 3 – Establish AMC Portfolio for processing by AMC – you require an EPIC ID to be able to complete the portfolio application. Your AMC candidate number will be confirmed by email within 3-5 working days.

Step 4 – Upload qualification/s to your EPIC account for processing by ECFMG. As you upload
each qualification, request that an EPIC report be sent to the AMC. When your credential is sent
for verification, the AMC will be notified to update the verification status on the AMC
qualifications portal.

  • For the Standard Pathway (AMC examinations) and Competent Authority pathways,

submit your medical degree (final medical diploma/primary qualification) for verification.

  • For specialist assessment purposes, your medical degree (final medical diploma/primary

qualification) and postgraduate qualification/s must be submitted.

Step 5 – Proceed with the pathway you are eligible for.

  • Standard Pathway: The Standard Pathway is for IMGs seeking general registration with the Board. You need to have a primary qualification in medicine and surgery awarded by a training institution recognized by the AMC to be eligible to apply to the AMC for assessment under this pathway. The AMC assesses IMGs under the Standard Pathway through the AMC CAT MCQ Examination and the AMC Clinical Examination or

Workplace based assessment of clinical skills and knowledge by an AMC-accredited authority.

Competent Authority Pathway: The Competent Authority Pathway is intended for overseas-trained non-specialists, but it is also available to specialists, including general practitioners. It is a pathway to general registration and does not result directly in recognition or registration as a specialist in Australia. IMGs who have completed the requirements of a Board-designated Competent Authority can apply to the Board for assessment under this pathway. If you wish to be assessed through the Competent Authority Pathway, you should apply directly to the Board.

Specialist Pathway: is for applicants in one of the following categories:

  • Overseas-trained specialists applying for assessment of comparability to the standard of a specialist trained in that specialty in Australia (specialist recognition)
  • specialists applying for an area of need position in Australia (area of need)
  • specialists or specialists-in-training wishing to undertake a short period of specialist or advanced training in Australia (short-term training).

N.B: IMGs who have a primary qualification in medicine and surgery from a training institution awarded by a training institution recognized by the AMC, and who have satisfied all the training and examination requirements to practice in their field of specialty in their country of training can apply for assessment under this pathway (specialist recognition or area of need).
